Diet

At this stage of life, the walls of our intestine become less effective at digesting and extracting nutrients from foods, so we get less energy from each meal. Our stomach might also become more sensitive to different foods. At the same time the size and strength of our muscles and bones is tending to decrease. These changes can make it hard for us to gain or maintain weight. Rather than eating more, we should think about eating things with higher nutrient levels. Exercise

During our 60’s and 70’s, we should engage in regular moderate impact and resistance exercise. This will help to minimise the loss of bone density, limit joint damage, and minimise the loss of muscle strength. We should avoid high impact exercise as this can cause aggravation to our joints.  

As our muscles get weaker, our eyesight deteriorates, and our reflexes become slower, we might start to notice problems with our balance. It is very important to do regular activities and exercises that challenge our balance, so we can remain steady on our feet. Specific strengthening exercises will also help to keep our legs and hips strong and help avoid falls

Mental Health

As we age, changes occur in the chemistry of the brain, and less of the chemicals that help us feel happy are released. We may notice that we feel more grumpy, short tempered and depressed – or those around us may notice it!  The physical changes which we are going through create additional challenges for our mental wellbeing – we have more aches and pains, we might not feel as strong or as fast as we used to.  

It is important at this age to maintain or find new interests, particularly those that involve socialising, physical activity, and challenge for our brains.

Retirement and Mental Health

This age marks a drastic life change. Retirement causes a sudden shift in routine, intellectual activities and responsibility. Whilst work and young kids used to keep us busy and motivated with a sense of purpose, retirement from work and children becoming independent can be quite a shock to the body and mind
